About the author
Dr. Jerry A. Smith

Dr. Jerry A. Smith has built software systems, and the organizations that build them, for more than thirty years. His career started in the U.S. Navy, where from 1980 to 1991 he was a nuclear engineer trained in the Naval Nuclear Power Program, a carrier-based jet pilot, and a software engineer on the research and development of airborne missile targeting systems at China Lake and San Diego.
After the Navy he served as chief technology officer of several software companies. He then founded artificial intelligence practices inside six global firms, among them Capgemini and Cognizant, where he created the company's first global data science practice. His recent work has been designing and running production AI systems in financially regulated settings, including a permission-aware decision-memory system for a private equity firm.
He is returning to the classroom to teach programming to engineering students, in the course this book was written for. He is the founder and principal of Verity Vantage Group, a production-AI engineering and advisory firm, and holds a PhD and an MS in computer science from Nova Southeastern University and a BS in electrical and electronics engineering from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.
He is the author of AI Assisted Software Engineering, the companion to this book, as well as The Enterprise Cortex and the novel Tulpamancer: Edge of Chaos, and he writes Building Minds, a newsletter on AI strategy and cognitive architecture. He lives in Shallotte, North Carolina, with his wife, Victoria, and can be found at verityvantagegroup.com.
